“Suzumiya Haruhi I”<\/p>\n

More straightforward, this is essentially a recruitment episode. Damn if there isn’t a lot of molestation this season, even if some of it is girl-on-girl.<\/p>\n

Kyon tells us that as a child he thought that espers, time travelers, aliens and evil corporations were real. As he grew older he came to accept that they don’t exist, but that he could still long for them.
\nOn the first day of high school he met Suzumiya Haruhi, a girl interested not in humans but rather all of those things that Kyon wants to believe in. Kyon talks to her one day, and thus a strange relationship is formed. Eventually Kyon inspires Suzumiya to form a club of indeterminate nature: The Save the World by Overloading it with Fun Suzumiya Haruhi Brigade, or SOS Brigade for short.<\/p>\n

Part of the reason that this was fun to watch was because Suzumiya Haruhi spent the entire first half of the episode looking monumentally pissed off. She’s a girl bored with the normality of existence, who wants to find something new and exciting. It’s not until Kyon tells her that bored people create things to follow their dreams that she gets the idea to affect change for herself … and her angry downwards eyebrows stay downwards but anger becomes sheer malevolence.
\nYes, Suzumiya Haruhi is inexplicably headstrong, and that’s the way we like it.<\/p>\n

The SOS Brigade presently doesn’t appear to serve any purpose, as none of the members have any idea what they’re doing there and Nagato Yuki is really just a ring-in. Suzumiya gave more than adequate reason for the inclusion of Asahina Mikuru in the club: moe<\/i> appeal. Loli face, large breasts; that is what Mikuru boils down to in the eyes of Suzumiya, and in this way she expects the SOS Brigade to claim success. It’s cynical, but it’s true.<\/p>\n

Sugita Tomokazu’s narration is less self-conscious this time around and it makes Kyon seem like an affable character who can’t quite understand the situation that he’s found himself in; he’s not even sure whether he likes it or hates it.
\nThe other aspects of this episode that should be noted are that the OP is generally a fun dancing adventure along similar dancing lines to the ED. However! Mikuru’s bounce is not in synch! Not that I noticed, mind.<\/p>\n

A better episode in the first in that it brings the first into sharp relief, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi<\/I> can continue for now.<\/p>\n
