Ouran High School Host Club – episode 3
April 23, 2006 on 10:21 pm | In Ouran High School Host Club | 3 Comments“Be Careful with Physical Examinations!”
This episode relied on reaction shots to get ahead. Fortunately, the reaction shots were almost without exception hilarious. The visual metaphor this time around was less impressive, though.
Tamaki becomes jealous of the Hitachiin brothers for spending so much time with Haruhi. When he finds out that the school’s physical examinations are but two days away, the Host Club has to kick into high gear to prevent the outing of Haruhi!
There’s really not a lot of story to this episode, as it mostly consists of the twins lording it up over Tamaki, and Tamaki declaring the rest of the club “homo side characters”. The new aspect of the show – the idea that the rest of the club thinks that Tamaki is good for a laugh and little else – is quite entertaining because everything that Tamaki receives is exactly what he deserves.
The real “revelation” of the episode is that Tamaki has a deep sympathy for families and probably has some sort of deep seated emotional problems from the past. I’m actually looking forward to their revelation.
While the colour scheme of this episode seemed far from vibrant until the last sakura shot, the long shots of the twins that illustrated their acting were hilarious. Overall a good episode that proves you don’t really need plot to succeed when you’ve got sufficient gags and a strong enough theme to carry a show.
Bonus!

If you replaced the periods with exclamation points,
# The beautiful looks that attract attention!
# The fearless rich men!
# The gentlemanship that cannot overlook the evil in this world!
sounds like the title of a School Rumble episode

.. thats a good idea. ‘The gentlemanship that cannot overlook the evil in this world!’…

You’re right. I rather liked the whole tea-cup thing in the second episode more so than the kite in this episode (at least thats what you’re talking about, right?). But it’ll add a nice touch to the episode if they have one every episode.

Yes, it’s the kite. I’m not sure if it’s a nice touch because it’s something that we’ll be looking for, and usually blatantly obvious. The tea cups were – dare I say – subtle, and the light bulbs served a real purpose that wasn’t quite clear until the end.
The kite. Well, it was just a kite.
