Digimon Savers – episode 15
September 13, 2006 on 12:29 am | In Digimon Savers | 3 Comments“Memories of my mother
Rise, MachGaogamon”
The lesson we’ve learned today is that, if you’re a giant metal grim reaper, you don’t mess with a guy’s memories of his mother’s death. You know what will happen if you do? He’ll emerge from his cocoon and his partner will evolve two levels and punch the heck out of you.
Wait, I just gave the entire episode away. Sorry about that!

The forest’s keeper, Jureimon”
I think that people underestimate how much the dialogue in Digimon Savers sticks. It’s jingoistic and designed to fire you up, in a good way.
This episode offers such gems as “I want to believe in those children and their unlimited potential”, which is nowhere near as good as this:
Nothing’s impossible for a man when he’s put his entire soul into his fist!
If you can write better than that, I don’t want to know about it.
Spoilers: What is Masaru’s father’s secret?

Evolve, Rise Greymon”
Let’s go to the Digital World! With this sort of declaration made at the end of an episode, you can tell that we’re about to head into the next stage of the story.
The story that we get here is a little girl’s impassioned plea for peace, and several traditional story devices.
Where is the creator?

With the introduction of an ultra villain Digimon, Digimon Savers proves that it loves me. I call it the “Aww yeah” factor.

Digimon Savers – episode 11
August 15, 2006 on 10:22 pm | In Digimon Savers | Comments Off on Digimon Savers – episode 11“Bring back the bond between parent and child
Evilmon’s bewitchment”
I’m not sure if a Faustian pact with a Digimon counts if you enter it unconsciously. In fact, my notes for this episode include the line “Wow, these Mephistos suck”. You get yourself some Evilmon and some Picodevimon, but they’re a bunch of morons.
That’s not to say that this is a bad episode, because this particular Digimon formula is nothing if not workable. Its use of euphemism is surprising, but there are no surprises otherwise.

Soulmon the Prankster”
The ancient battle of man versus tanker is settled once and for all in this stirring episode of Digimon Savers.

The Secretly Maneuvering Togemon”
Despite my realisation that Digimon Savers has presented several cases of people making Faustian deals with Digimon, this episode was an effective mystery story. As an added bonus, all of the boxing scenes were reminiscent of the likes of Tomorrow’s Joe (Ashita no Joe).

A thrilling indictment of both the Japanese gossip media machine and of the fraudulent nature of using performance enhancing Digimon to further your career.
I watched this episode on the train, sitting next to my mother. She finished reading her book and turned her attention to my screen. As Masaru ran in for his attack she asked me “Why is she punching that other Digimon?”
I had to set her straight. This evening she told me that “Digimon aren’t half as cute as Pokémon”.
Digimon Savers – episode 7

I almost forgot that this episode required a fight with a rogue Digimon. It wasn’t until eight and a half minutes in, after the cold opening and the OP, that I saw a Digimon name in the title and remembered that this show is about Digimon liberation; having discovered its sense of humour and the general idea of “heart”, the series barely concerns itself with what is not yet an overarcing story.
Episode complexes: Mothercon, sistercon, maidcon.

The inevitable happens! Also, they’re really messing with established evolutionary trends here. Don’t reinvent the wheel, people!
