“The Girl and the Peas”

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find stories about terminally ill children terribly depressing. “The Girl and the Peas” is like that for most of its run, but then we’re all reminded that The Snow Queen is, at heart, a fairytale.
The ideas about hope and that “miracles” are actually caused by determination, were quite nice.

I never thought I’d say this, but some of the matte utilised in this episode was not strictly necessary. Still, a good episode that focused on the emotional underpinnings of the story. Good news: this is likely the final appearance of the poorly designed Matilde.

“Fragments of the mirror”


At last, The Snow Queen shows its literary roots.

The Snow Queen’s mirror shatters and a fragment finds its way into Kay’s eye. Historically, the fragments of the mirror corrupt the world, making those that they touch see everything as ugly and evil. As a result, Kay becomes something of a bastard.

It’s like stepping into the seventies! Dezaki Osamu, legendary director of Rose of Versailles, Aim for the Ace! and, in modern times, BlackJack, has come up gold with this anime adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s dense 1845 Fairy Tale.
