Human will is a strange thing. Mushishi is beginning to distinguish itself by paying more attention to the feelings of the mushi affected characters. Not everything in this world is cut and dry.
Ginko visits an isolated island where the villagers pay homage to “the living god”, a mute girl who turns into an old woman at night and has . The island’s leaders have produced a living god in every generation.
Not surprisingly, the living god is actually a girl infected by mushi; her childhood friend wants to free her from a life of what he sees as slavery.
The insights into this episode are definitely surprising: slavery, happiness and even vigilantism. What is happiness? Can a mushi provide it? Is it Ginko’s place to decide what is right and what is wrong? A typically pretty episode, providing a metaphorical insight into leper colonies, of all things!
With each episode, Mushishi grows more nebulous. The ideas reach far into the spectrum of human emotion and come back strong each time: an excellent meditation.
