Girls’ High (Joshikousei) – episode zero

“High school girls have their stupid side”

This show goes by a billion names; it seems that the Japanese English name is “Girls’ High”. I’ve done my research and I haven’t watched any anime with substantial fan service in it since October 2005, and I can’t remember the last show I saw that prominently featured panties: I was surprised to see Girls’ High is swimming in them.

This is a ten minute promo OVA to set up the concept for the Girls’ High TV series: girls about to enter a private high school, excited about the prospects in store, break into their school the day before their entrance ceremony. They are shocked and appaled to find that girls might be as messy and disgusting as boys are.

This is a very simple set up, filled with many unashamed panty shots and a perverted “camera man”. Shots that could frame centre to give a proper framing of a character’s face instead go down, down, into the skirt region. I’m reminded of what it was like to be a mere lad of 16 or 17 and researching fan service on the internet, and writing what one might call an “uninformed critical essay” on the matter.

It’s fun stuff, featuring everyone’s favourite person of the moment, Noto Mamiko, as the bespectacled member of the group. It seems like I’m now watching three shows with her in it after coming down from Monster.

Girls’ High is the anime that I don’t normally go for but sometimes envy those who write about it. This time it shall be mine.

  1. Apparently it begins broadcast in Japan this month.

    By the way, I gather you haven’t seen “Najica Blitz Tactics”. I doubt this series has as many panty shots as that one does, but that’s because it’s pretty much impossible for any series to have more.

  2. I suggest to stay away from Najica. Most of the time it looks as if it was animated with MS Paint. This show was really a reminder that quality goes over quantity. I’m actually not so sure whether Najica was full of fan service or rather sarcasm. The protagonist (Najica) came off very wooden and unsympathic. The only thing that worked a bit was her synthetic assistant.

  3. Wow, they’re not even trying on the skirts…just making them so short the panties are visible from any angle barring directly overhead. Bold!

  4. The skirts are the result of creative modification from the girls themselves. I was at the train station today and noticed that the skirts school girls wear in Australia actually go past the knees. Seems sensible to me.
