“The Elementary Host is the Naughty Type”

Almost sentimentality is the name of the day, counterbalanced by discussion of character types, and an important lesson is learned: while the Host Club was designed to please girls in general, individual females are a different matter entirely.

A young boy, by the name of Takouji Shirou, wants to learn how to please women. Tamaki takes Shirou under his wing, but the boy turns out to be an ingrate snot.

As always happens in stories with bratty little kids, Shirou has his own noble intentions, which come to the fore. In a “surprising” move, Tamaki is sensitive to the situation and takes the opportunity to shine as more of a human being than as a silly Arabian prince cosplayer.

The episode is exactly like this sort of story plays out, and it does it with style and grace. It’s not much of a one for humour beyond the whole “covert ops” antics, but that scarcely matters.
I predicted back in the day that Ouran High School Host Club would become a “client of the week” sort of show, but that’s not proving to be a bad thing. If we gradually become more used to the sensitive, dramatic sides of the characters – escaping from their initial deliberately caricatured faces – then this show could throw anything at us.
