“The genius who returned home, Touma! Crush Meramon”

Introducing the traditional rival character! Problem is he’s a rich bastard with a level of arrogance found only in those who are escorted in limousines to their digimon fights.
Masaru’s just going to have to take him down a notch! Or learn to love him get along with him.

Shinigami no Ballad – episode 6

“The journey of the heart”

A nice end to this series, which I would rank roughly ten thousand geological ages better than its predecessor in the time slot. The strange thing is that you never really get a keen feel for Momo or Daniel, but the individual stories are crafted well enough that it doesn’t really matter that much.

Ouran High School Host Club – episode 3

“Be Careful with Physical Examinations!”

This episode relied on reaction shots to get ahead. Fortunately, the reaction shots were almost without exception hilarious. The visual metaphor this time around was less impressive, though.

Kiba – episode 3

“The Ones With Power”

Try as I might, I can’t bring myself to dislike Kiba. Even this episode had some interesting concepts and exciting uses of cool new skills. Overall, it was an episode that one can apply lots of adjectives to.

Although whoever is writing Zed’s dialogue needs to be shot.

“The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi II”

The molestation continues unabated! Mikuru’s boobs will never be safe from the malicious designs of Suzumiya Haruhi, the single most evil teenaged Japanese girl in history!

“Physical examination is the scent of a maiden’s shyness”

To quote Steve Carell: “wow, this is graphic”.

Utawarerumono – episode 2

April 19, 2006 on 12:15 am | In Utawarerumono | Comments Off on Utawarerumono – episode 2

“The Violent King of the Forest”

Yep, that king of the forest sure is violent, all right. I don’t know why I was reluctant to watch this second episode, because it actually turned out to be quite compelling. I suppose that I’m slowly getting over the animal people and coming to enjoy a story of man’s uneasy symbiosis with religion.

Digimon Savers – episode 2

April 18, 2006 on 11:49 pm | In Digimon Savers | Comments Off on Digimon Savers – episode 2

“Burn, Digisoul of Anger! Flymon, lurking in the darkness!”

This second episode of Digimon Savers had just about the longest cold opening I’ve ever seen in anything. Clocking in at six minutes, it’s a wonder that they bothered with the OP at all this time around!
Anyway, the program seems like it’s been hit with sordid, under-the-table sorts of deals and its heroes have hardly the most noble causes in mind. It’s a bit simplistic, but it works for the most part.

Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross – episodes 8-14

April 17, 2006 on 11:42 pm | In Southern Cross | Comments Off on Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross – episodes 8-14

Southern Cross has become a fairly compelling program, replete with several conventions of the genre and some other aspects that I can’t recall having seen before. Southern Cross is not without its surprises and, while it may have been better served with a more open-ended structure, is actually quite enjoyable.

Nana – episode 2

April 17, 2006 on 1:59 pm | In Nana | 4 Comments

Nana abandons any sense of plot advancement so that it may tell the origin story of Pink Nana. I’ve consulted one of my friends who is versed in the manga, and she calls Pink Nana “Stupid Nana”; I’m kind of inclined to agree.

While this episode is okay, I would have preferred some time to see Pink and Black Nana together. Unfortunately, the past of Pink Nana is going to be the focus of the next episode as well! There is no escape from this vicious cycle of the past!
