Scarab healed your wounds! – episode 7
May 18, 2006 on 10:20 pm | In Suzumiya Haruhi | 1 Comment“Mystérique Sign”
I no longer care that they didn’t immediately conclude the “Remote Island Syndrome” story, because this was infinitely better. It’s not so much a side story as it is an actual complement to the series, and hey! Look at this! Haruhi isn’t the heroine after all!
Ouran High School Host Club – episode 6
May 18, 2006 on 10:07 pm | In Ouran High School Host Club | 1 Comment“The Elementary Host is the Naughty Type”
Almost sentimentality is the name of the day, counterbalanced by discussion of character types, and an important lesson is learned: while the Host Club was designed to please girls in general, individual females are a different matter entirely.
Evangelion 10th Anniversary Boxset: 10 years all over again!
May 18, 2006 on 9:51 am | In Evangelion | 9 CommentsAnime News Network brings the news that ADV is releasing a special tenth anniversary collection of Evangelion in August. Now, call me crazy, but I could have sworn that Renewal of Evangelion (here Evangelion Platinum) was extensively marketed in Japan as the tenth anniversary collection. I distinctly recall reading in NewType, two years ago, reminiscinces of how great Evangelion was back in the day. The tenth anniversary was based not on its airing date, but from the beginning of the production cycle.
GAiNAX didn’t just restore Evangelion for kicks, nor did I replace my original DVDs with Platinum for kicks.
So now we’ve got some sort of false commemoration to wring more money out of this poor franchise. With a $250US price tag, this collection had better be made of solid gold or something, because that’s a huge price to gauge out of people for something they already own a billion times over (you could buy a Wii for that!). Poor Shinji: you’ll get your rest some day.
Binchou-tan – episode 8

An episode that is by turns depressing and uplifting. Damn your empty life, Binchou-tan!
Yakitate!! Japan – episode 61
May 17, 2006 on 8:07 pm | In Yakitate!! Japan | Comments Off on Yakitate!! Japan – episode 61“Kanmuri’s secret! A jam showdown without moral codes!”
Dare I suggest that Yakitate!! Japan is experiencing something of a comeback? This episode featured generally positive Kawachi material and supplied Kanmuri with some history.
Girls’ High – episode 5
May 17, 2006 on 12:06 am | In Girls' High | 3 Comments“The swimsuit, the beauty and the macho teacher”
Girls’ High tries drama. It’s shallow and transparent, but it isn’t eye-gougingly terrible.
Rose of Versailles – episodes 20-24
May 16, 2006 on 11:53 pm | In Rose of Versailles | 2 CommentsThe Affair of the Necklace comes to the fore, once again illustrating the flawless political logic of Rose of Versailles while showcasing the somewhat nonsensical personal actions of these characters.
Spoiler territory yonder
Angel Heart – episode 15
May 16, 2006 on 11:50 pm | In Angel Heart | Comments Off on Angel Heart – episode 15“Find my Papa!”
This is like an actual City Hunter job. One might be turned off by the fact that the client is a child (anyone remember the “esper shoujo” story of City Hunter?), but, in proper Saeba Ryo style, a real story emerges from it.
Hell, I even laughed in this episode. It’s just that good.
Nana – episode 6
May 16, 2006 on 11:48 pm | In Nana | Comments Off on Nana – episode 6I was made to hit in Tokyooooo
It’s almost literally episode one all over again! I would estimate that this episode contains roughly 10% new animation.
Utawarerumono – episode 6
May 16, 2006 on 11:46 pm | In Utawarerumono | 5 Comments“The Assembled Powers”
In his book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Douglass describes a slaveholder who dealt pre-emptive beatings to his slaves in order to keep them obedient.
This has always sounded stupid to me, and this is precisely what Emperor Inkara is: an idiot. Normally in anime, when you see both sides of a conflict in their planning stages, you can get some sort of positive spin on the enemy. Not so here.
Oh, and you really can tell that Utawarerumono is based on an H game, can’t you?
