Mushishi – episode 22

July 20, 2006 on 1:10 am | In Mushishi | 6 Comments

“The offshore shrine”

Another excellent episode of the show that justifies all anime love.

Ginko comes to an island like Heaven and discovers a case of nature versus nurture, and of mushishi versus the natural order of life. This is one of the more morally ambiguous episodes of Mushishi.

Ouran High School Host Club – episode 14

“Interview the famous host club”

Before I get to this episode, I’d like to point out this lengthy comment left about the the controversial pivotal event of episode eight. I don’t agree with all of the sentiments expressed but I think it’s worth airing.

Now, to days of news and roses! Maladjusted club presidents destroying the school at large!

Angel Heart – episode 18

July 20, 2006 on 1:02 am | In Angel Heart | Comments Off on Angel Heart – episode 18

“Family Ties”

Xiang Ying’s dream memory takes her further into the origins of Kaori and Ryo’s relationship, thus destroying many senses of continuity with City Hunter. It’s enough to make my brain overheat and almost (but not really) envy those in the Angel Heart audience who have never seen its progenitor.

I’m forced to view these characters by comparison with what I thought I knew because they do share fundaments. The new revelations about the identity of Ryo, however, are quite a shake.

Last Exile

July 20, 2006 on 12:58 am | In Last Exile | 16 Comments

Imagine a world in which the people on the ground are in a state of ecological turmoil, one half in danger of freezing, one in danger of melting. In the sky of this world lives a faction that governs the battles of the cold and the hot, and doles out technology as it sees fit so that the groundlings may themselves, to a limited extent, take to the skies … if only to wage war in it.

Next, imagine going to a casino and winning a million dollars. Then imagine leaving that casino without remembering to cash in your chips. What you’ve got there is something that represents one million dollars, but most definitely is not one million dollars.

Last Exile is a million dollars worth of chips: uncashed potential that never let me underneath its skin despite its best efforts to forge a sense of community among its characters. It’s a mixed case of simply not disclosing enough of the situation to the audience, and then compounding the problem by holding the characters at arm’s length.

Kiba – episode 14

July 18, 2006 on 12:32 am | In Kiba | 2 Comments

“Temptation of Power”

or

“Fresh Baked Emo Bread!? Miki is a stupid pansy face!”

Okay, I’ve decided to make up new names for episodes. It’s a new arc, with a new ED. There’s something else about it: it’s okay. But not great.

Digimon Savers – episode 8

July 18, 2006 on 12:32 am | In Digimon Savers | 4 Comments

“Yoshino gets her Cinderella Story!? Chrysalimon’s Shadow!”

A thrilling indictment of both the Japanese gossip media machine and of the fraudulent nature of using performance enhancing Digimon to further your career.

I watched this episode on the train, sitting next to my mother. She finished reading her book and turned her attention to my screen. As Masaru ran in for his attack she asked me “Why is she punching that other Digimon?”
I had to set her straight. This evening she told me that “Digimon aren’t half as cute as Pokémon”.

Utawarerumono – episode 12

“Unrest”

And lo, Rak Shine cut loose on his people and mightily sliced them in two. And, in retaliation, Rak Shine was stabbed verily by his followers.

Many, many years later, the venerable Oboro decided to graduate from solving his problems through vomiting by transferring this awesome power into headbutting walls.

Spoilers: Rak Shine’s evil ways revealed inside!

Ouran High School Host Club – episode 13

July 18, 2006 on 12:30 am | In Ouran High School Host Club | 5 Comments

“Haruhi in Wonderland”

This episode is way too much like hard work, with absolutely no ambient music until the end and almost no real humour to reach its point.

I’m fine when a comedy goes serious, but there’s a difference between serious and trying-too-hard to the point of being boring.

Kiba – episode 13

“Strength to Dash”

Why is this show called Kiba, anyway? Why is it that I cannot tear myself away from watching it?

Three deaths. One episode. No waiting.

… exploding stomach attack!

Death spoilers!
